Transform Your Thunderbolt Computer Into a Graphics Workstation

Whether you’re editing, rendering, color grading, animating or creating special effects, many of the pro applications you use rely on desktop and workstation graphics (GPU) cards to do the heavy lifting in processing data. Unfortunately, many popular computers are equipped only with integrated graphics or low-power discrete GPUs that bottleneck performance when performing these tasks. Happily, there’s a simple path to greater productivity—add a Sonnet external GPU (eGPU). The eGPU Breakaway™ Box 750 and 750ex Thunderbolt 3 to GPU PCIe card expansion systems boost your eGPU-compatible computer’s graphics performance by connecting a high-performance GPU card to your computer via a single cable.

Future-proof Upgrade

With each new generation of GPU cards, users can look forward to a step (or leap) forward in performance. Less predictable is how much power they will require to operate—better performance frequently requires increased power. For eGPU users, power consumption can be a concern. Don’t limit your future card choices—choose a Sonnet eGPU Breakaway Box 750 Equipped with 750W power supplies, these Sonnet chassis easily support the highest power demands of latest GPUs and have plenty of extra power to support GPU cards from generations to come.

No Compromise GPU Card Choice

eGPU Breakaway Box 750 systems are designed specifically to accommodate the most power-hungry double-width GPU cards. They support Thunderbolt-compatible cards(1) with popular GPU chipsets—such as AMD Radeon™ RX series (including VEGA GPUs); and NVIDIA® GeForce® series and TITAN GPUs. Even the latest pro cards—AMD Radeon Pro and NVIDIA Quadro® GPUs—are supported! (Note that macOS® supports only AMD GPU cards in eGPU systems, while Windows® supports AMD and NVIDIA cards.) With a GPU card installed, a Breakaway Box functions as a simple plug-in upgrade to significantly accelerate the demanding needs of your video production workflow.

4K to 8K Workflows –

Connect Two or More Breakaway Boxes

Many task times on supported applications—such as Adobe® Premiere® Pro, DaVinci Resolve™, and Maxon Cinema 4D™, to name a few—can be cut significantly with one eGPU Breakaway Box connected. But, for computers with multiple Thunderbolt ports, times can be slashed when two, three, or four Breakaway Boxes are employed. Connecting one or more eGPUs can multiply your computer’s graphics processing power, enabling it to handle 4K, 5K, 6K, and 8K workflows more efficiently. Plus, a computer’s onboard discrete GPU also contributes to the aggregate performance.

Designed for GPU Cards, Also Supports Other Demanding PCIe Cards

The Breakaway Box’s single x16 PCIe 3.0 slot accommodates full-length, double-width cards, and its 750W power supply supports trouble-free operation.

Coolest & Quietest Add-your-own-card eGPU System Available

With its large variable-speed temperature-controlled fan that quietly and effectively cools the installed card, the eGPU Breakaway Box can be comfortably used in noise-sensitive working environments. Its single-port 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 interface ensures the full 2750 MB/s of PCIe bandwidth(2) is dedicated to the installed card.

Graphic-Intensive Gaming Support

There’s no need for you to carry a heavy, loud, and hot-running gaming laptop to have a great gaming experience—just plug in a Breakaway Box and add the GPU power you want when you need it! A Breakaway Box is ideal for empowering graphic-intensive gaming on an Intel® processor-based MacBook Air® or 13-inch MacBook Pro®, Ultrabook™ and other thin/light notebook computers that otherwise would deliver a poor gaming experience. Accelerated graphics can either be displayed on one, two, or more external monitors, or on your notebook’s own display panel(4). Best of all, you can upgrade the GPU card in the Box to keep up with the latest in GPU technology (unlike with gaming laptops).

Technical Notes

  1. eGPU Breakaway Box models support up to a standard full-height, full-length, double-width card. Cards with three power connectors are not supported.
  2. While each eGPU Breakaway Box 750 model features a 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 interface, some computers equipped with Thunderbolt 3use an x2 PCIe lane implementation of Thunderbolt 3 technology that limits PCIe performance to 20Gbps. Full performance also requires the use of the includedThunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) cable, or other Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) cables. eGPU Breakaway Box 750ex divides bandwidth between the installedGPU card and connected peripherals when connected peripherals are operating.
  3. A few professional applications (such as DaVinci Resolve or Cinema 4D) have menu options to use the external GPU even if the app is run on the internal monitor. Final Cut Pro requires 10.14.1+ for external GPU acceleration.
  4. Ultimate gaming performance is attained by using a display attached to eGPU.
  5. See Using eGPU with Parallels Desktop for Mac.
  6. Not compatible with VIVE Wireless Adapter.
  7. Neither Apple, nor AMD, nor Sonnet support eGPUs on Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt  Macs. There is a method to support Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt Macs from Purge-Wrangler. Not every Mac is supported. If your Mac has a discrete NVIDIA eGPU, this method will not work. If you have any trouble, our support teams cannot assist you.
  8. Power adapter cable for Avid Pro Tools | HDX card sold separately.
  9. Plus power delivery to laptop, if activated.
  10. Under macOS 10.14.6, a Mac mini is compatible with a Breakaway Box with Vega 56, Vega 64, WX 8200, and WX 9100. A Mac mini with a Breakaway Box with an RX560/570/580/590 must be booted with a monitor connected to the Mac mini’s HDMI port. The monitor may be moved to the GPU after booting. This anomaly is fixed in macOS 10.15.7+.
  11. 8K displays require a GPU card that supports 8K displays.
  • For example, the AMD Radeon Pro W5700 has a USB-C Alt-Mode DisplayPort output.
