Connecting Multiple Displays to Your M1/M2/M3/M4 Chip Macs

Base model Apple Silicon Macs, like the M1, M2, M3, and M4, are powerful machines, but their native display support can sometimes feel limited. Many models are designed to work seamlessly with just one display. However, with the help of DisplayLink-compatible adapters, you can easily expand your workspace and connect multiple displays to your Mac.

To utilize these adapters, installing the DisplayLink Manager software is essential. Download the latest version from Synaptics’ official website. 


Steps for Connecting Two Displays to a Mac Using the OWC USB-C Dual HDMI 4K Display Adapter

The OWC USB-C Dual HDMI 4K Display Adapter enables Mac users to connect two external displays, even on Mac models that natively support only one external display. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Check Compatibility

    1. Ensure your Mac model is supported by the adapter (M1, M2, M3, or higher MacBooks and Mac minis).
    2. Confirm that the displays you’re connecting support HDMI and are within the adapter’s specifications (up to 4K at 60Hz for dual displays).

Step 2: Install DisplayLink Software

    1. Download the DisplayLink Manager for macOS.
    2. Install the software by following the on-screen instructions.
    3. Grant necessary permissions:
      1. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording.
      2.  Enable DisplayLink Manager in the list.
      3. Restart the DisplayLink Manager app if required.

Step 3: Connect the Adapter to Your Mac

    1. Plug the OWC USB-C Dual HDMI 4K Display Adapter into one of your Mac’s USB-C or Thunderbolt ports.
    2. Connect the adapter’s power pass-through port to your Mac’s charger (optional, but recommended for uninterrupted power).

Step 4: Connect the Displays

    1. Attach an HDMI cable to the first monitor and plug the other end into the HDMI 1 port on the adapter.
    2. Repeat this process for the second monitor, connecting it to the HDMI 2 port on the adapter.

Step 5: Configure the Displays

    1. Open System Settings > Displays on your Mac.
    2. Your Mac should automatically detect the two external displays.
    3. Arrange the displays:
      1. Drag the display boxes to arrange them in your preferred layout.
      2. Select a primary display by dragging the white menu bar to the desired screen.
    4. Adjust the resolution and refresh rates for each display if needed.

Step 6: Test the Setup

    1. Move your mouse cursor across all connected displays to ensure they’re functioning properly.
    2. Open apps or content on each screen to verify the displays are extending or mirroring correctly

Step 7: Optional Adjustments

    • Use the DisplayLink Manager app to optimize settings.'
    • Enable “Login Screen Extension” in the DisplayLink Manager app if you need the displays to work on the login screen.

Enabling Necessary macOS Permissions

After installation, macOS requires specific permissions for DisplayLink to function correctly:

1. Open System Settings: Click on the Apple menu and select “System Settings.”

2. Navigate to Privacy & Security: In the sidebar, choose “Privacy & Security.”

3. Access Screen Recording: Scroll to find and select “Screen Recording.”

4. Authorize DisplayLink Manager: Locate “DisplayLink Manager” in the list and toggle it on.

5. Authenticate Changes: If prompted, enter your login credentials to confirm.

6. Restart DisplayLink Manager: Click “Quit & Reopen” to apply the changes.
